Practice and Office Expansion

Litigation and Enforcement Practice

In May 2011, David M. Becker rejoined the Washington office after serving as General Counsel and Senior Policy Director of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. 

Juan P. Morillo also joined our Washington office in May as a partner. Mr. Morillo was previously at Clifford Chance, where he was a partner and head of the firm’s U.S. litigation and dispute resolution practice.

In March 2012, Jonathan S. Kolodner, former Acting Chief of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, joined the New York office as counsel. Mr. Kolodner’s practice focuses on criminal, securities, and other enforcement and regulatory matters, as well as on complex commercial litigation. 

Sunil Gadhia joined our London office as a partner in May 2012. Mr. Gadhia was previously at Stephenson Harwood, where he was a commercial and financial litigation partner and a former Chief Executive.

Since the start of 2008, Cleary Gottlieb has added 19 litigation partners around the world, including recently elected partners Jennifer Kennedy Park and Carlo Santoro. Many on our team hold a wealth of government experience. Our practice includes ten former federal prosecutors, including one who served as Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, three former General Counsel of the SEC, as well as former senior officials of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division and the Federal Trade Commission.

Banking and Financial Institutions Practice 

Hugh C. Conroy, Jr. joined our New York office as counsel in November 2011 as part of our global banking and financial institutions practice. Mr. Conroy was previously at Citigroup, where he was a Managing Director and Associate General Counsel in the Bank Regulatory Office.

Our banking and financial institutions practice spans 12 of the firm’s offices in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The practice includes 14 partners and counsel in New York and Washington who are experts in financial institutions regulation and compliance, including recently elected partner Katherine Mooney Carroll.

London Competition Practice

Peter Freeman CBE, QC, former Chairman of the UK’s Competition Commission, joined the London office as a senior consultant in November 2011. Associate Paul Gilbert also joined the London office in January 2011 from the UK Office of Fair Trading, where he was Deputy Director of Competition Policy.

We now have three partners who practice competition law in London – Maurits J.F.M. Dolmans, Romano F. Subiotto QC, and Nicholas Levy – and a dozen associates who work on UK competition matters for a large number of clients.

Hong Kong and Beijing Offices

The firm launched a Hong Kong law practice in February 2011. The practice is focused on Hong Kong-listed IPOs and other capital markets transactions, as well as on private equity and other M&A transactions. We have approximately 55 lawyers in Hong Kong and Beijing, many of whom are Hong Kong-qualified. 

Freeman Chan joined the firm as a partner in January 2011 from the Hong Kong office of Norton Rose, where he led its China corporate practice. Partner Christof von Dryander transferred to Hong Kong in February 2011 after nearly 20 years in Frankfurt. Also in February, Li Li joined the firm as Beijing Office Director from the Shanghai office of Debevoise & Plimpton, where she was a corporate partner.

Buenos Aires Office

In July 2011, partner Jaime A. El Koury joined our Buenos Aires office after more than 30 years in New York. He, along with partner Andrés de la Cruz, continues to work with the firm’s New York-based Latin America practice, which includes more than 100 lawyers. We have been actively engaged in Latin American work for more than 50 years, and are widely viewed as the preeminent international law firm in the region.
